art & media: from Elle France, Nathalie Dolivo, Makes Controversial Comments About ‘Black Style’

Read the Article at HuffingtonPost

MY OPINION:

WOW, I DON’T KNOW WHAT’S WORSE, THIS OR THAT PSYCHOLOGY TODAY ARTICLE. This journalist clearly just got her degree and had CLEARLY never spent time with any Black people in the African Diaspora and CLEARLY, if you call yourself a “fashionista” you haven’t studied fashion throughout the years. Are you serious? For the record, most fashion concepts come from Black folks, particularly today (with the vast influence of Hip Hop culture), but very much so in the 60s/70s and the African Aesthetic has always been a part of fashion (and for the record, we broke barriers as models back in the day too). I think the very fact that this person works for Elle FRANCE says she knows nothing of the value of Blacks in fashion as Europeans have always valued our style and beauty. The nerve! I’m fuming. AGAIN! And people wonder why race is always at the forefront of our minds. Are you kidding? Do they really have to ask?

IN ADDITION (As I continued to respond to comments):

But clearly there is a generation of writers and journalists and young Black people who know nothing of our history in America and overseas.  If this “fashionista journalista” were worth her salt, she would know that Black people have always been valued for our beauty, sometimes moreso in Europe. She would know, if the studied, that we have always lead the way in fashion.  What she showed to the world is just how ignorant and uneducated in her craft she is. And in France of all places, a place where Black beauty has always been valued, a place who will put Black models on the runway before they will in America.  It’s pathetic and it’s sad that Elle France will probably keep her employed. They need to send her to a fashion refresher course so she knows what she’s talking about before she writes her next article.

Thanks for reading!

black coffee (home decor): from Open Space Feng Shui, Feng Shui Office Bagua Map: Focus On Your Success | Open Spaces Feng Shui

black coffee: home decor

This is so funny because I was just explaining to someone a similar “feng shui” sign in my office. I find feng shui so interesting and I do believe in the placement of things and how it aligns with who we are.

Try it and check out this great article from Open Spaces Feng Shui.

eat.write: #Cooking2012 – Favorite sites to help me fulfill one of my New Year’s Resolutions

The Chew

Whole Living

So, I recently, FINALLY shared my New Year’s resolutions with my readers. In an effort to stick to my list of goals for 2012, I thought I would share my favorite cooking and food related sites, since one of my goals is to cook more. Here we go!

Foodwww.food.com – This is a great site, very simplistic and you can save recipes to an online “cookbook”. Love it!

All Recipeswww.allrecipes.com – I like All Recipes, but it’s limited in what you can do. If you want to use some of the more advanced parts of the site, you have to pay a subscription. I don’t think I’m ready for all of that just yet. Baby Steps!

Whole Living Magazinewww.wholeliving.com – I love this site because, 1) I love Whole Living Magazine (you can get a subscription via www.maghound.com, plus lots of other magazines), and 2) They always offer healthy options in a fun, colorful format, along with great holistic fitness tips.

Everyday Foodwww.everydayfood.com – I have loved this Martha Stewart magazine for a few years now. It’s a tiny petite publication that contains what I think are simple recipes, even from Martha Stewart. I like it also because it offers these “grocery lists” with a variety of ways to cook up the ingredients on your list.  (I also get this on my www.maghound.com subscription service – I keep plugging it because it’s very cheap!)

Real Simple Magazinewww.realsimple.com – I’ve been loving Real Simple for a few years now also.  It’s well, real simple! It’s always an easy read, delivered in a very informative in a very vivid and colorful format. It’s not all recipes, but it has some great simple, healthy recipes that anyone can make, and it offers various ways to utilize the same ingredients.

The Chew (TV Show) – www.thechew.com – I love, love, love this cooking show! Did I say I love this show!  To me, it’s kind of a twist between the Old School Julia Child and The View all rolled into one. Its a daytime cooking and lifestyle show (so I’m normally at work when it comes on), but I catch the episodes online at www.abc.com.  The fun part about this cooking show is that it’s not a reality competition like so many of the other shows.

the faux Marthawww.thefauxmartha.com – A great blog on WordPress. She has this delicious looking Oatmeal Breakfast Bites recipe that made me want to follow her! I’m making that next week!

Multicultural Foodie Sites I Recommend:

G. Garvin – (Star of Turn Up The Heat on BET and Georgia Road Trip with G. Garvin, a new show premiering on The Cooking Channel on February 12.) - http://www.chefgarvin.com/index.php

The Culinary Scoop (by Culinary Noir Magazine) – www.theculinaryscoop.com – A great culinary magazine focused on African American lifestyle.

Everyday Cookin (Darius T. Williams; also owns Fresh Go Now, www.fresgonow.com, a subscription based grocery delivery service based in Chicago)  - www.everydaycookin.com – Just a guy who likes to cook, learned to cook on his own, and a great site.

Chef Carla Hall (one of the stars of The Chew) - http://www.carlahall.com/ - If you watched Carla Hall on The Top Chef competition, you know exactly who she is, and you will especially enjoy her as one of the hosts of The Chew.

Down Home With The Neelys (on Food Network) - www.foodnetwork.com/down-home-with-the-neelys/recipes – The Neelys are this great “cooking power couple” who, I think, may be the first African Americans to have a show on The Food Network. (Please correct me if I’m wrong.)

Aaron Sanchez (on Food Network) – Authentic Latino Cuisine –  http://www.foodnetwork.com/aaroacuten-sanchez/recipes/index.html (has a new show called Chef vs. City)

Aarti Sequeira (on Food Network ) – Authentic Indian Cuisine (lots of vegetarian recipes) http://www.foodnetwork.com/aarti-sequeira/recipes/index.html (Loved Aarti on Season 6 of Food Network Star)

Sunny Anderson (on Food Network) – American Cuisine - http://www.foodnetwork.com/sunny-anderson/recipes/index.html (Show comes on Saturday mornings, very fun and bubbly!)

Whew! I know that’s quite a few sites, but I love them all, not to mention all of the cookbooks I have tagged on my Amazon.com site to read! Needless to say, I will be a busy cooking fool in 2012!  Wish me luck!
